Amazing, Rare & Beautiful Linux Desktop Environments

Linux OS has many amazing features. Customization of linux is very easy and interesting. There are so many desktop user interface available to user. If you want your computer to look and feel the way you like, you can customize your linux machine as you want. There are so many less known and rare user interface available by which we can make our linux machine incredible and fast.

Some of them are listed below:-

  • AmiWM

    This user interface was designed for the hardcore Amiga Nerds. It stands for Amiga Window Manager. It is very simple window manager with the objective to emulate the Amiga Workbench. There are some patches for AmigaWM to look like the Amiga Workbench.
  • UDE

    UDE stands for Unix Desktop Environment. It is a very simple user interface for X Window System. It is having efficient and lightweight design, So it can be used on almost any Unix-like operating system, mostly without any porting effort. If you have three button mouse then you can fully utilize that because UDE also makes heavy usage of mouse.
  • Awesome

    Awesome is a dynamic window manager for the X Window System developed in the C and Lua programming languages. It aims to be extremely small and fast, yet extensively customizable and make it possible for the user to productively manage windows with the use of keyboard, so no mouse is required. The main goal of this user interface is to provide great support for multiple monitors and claims to be as fast as thunder.
  • Mezzo

    Mezzo is a simple desktop interface which was added to Symphony OS. It follows the Jason Spisak's Laws of Interface Design and poses a new way of presenting data to the user. It is having four sections at Desktop for targeting the tasks and files related to System, Programs, Files, and Trash.
  • Sugar

    Sugar is a FOSS desktop environment which was developed as a part of One Laptop Per Child project. It was designed for children so it is not having the desktop, folder and window metaphors for simplycity. It handles only one application at a time and saves the user's running program session and allows to later use the interface. It runs most of the computer's hardware.
  • ROX

    It was inspired from the user interface of RISC-OS, and stands as RISC-OS on X. It brings the old and famous concept "Everything is a File". It is having a graphical spatial file manager called Rox-Filer. Files are loaded by dragging them to an application from the filer, and saved by dragging back to the filer.
  • ratPoison

    ratPoison means that no mouse is required. Their user interface and much of their functionality are inspired by the GNU Screen terminal multiplexer. ratPoison completely ignores the mouse, and avoids window decorations as much as possible.  Ratpoison is fast, customizable, easy to use and stable. Plus, you probably won't need to worry too much about setting up any security on your system, because most people won't even know how to open an application if they sit down at your computer.
